I have a friend who is obsessed with penguins. I work with miniatures a lot and wanted to make something for him. So I decided to do penguins. Of course at the time I didn't know a thing about penguins.
When I started this project I wanted to make the penguins as realistic as possible, so I borrowed a lot of books from the library and I went hunting on the web for penguin pictures. By the time I finished, I knew more about penguins than I ever imagined.
I made the penguins out of Sculpty (which is a polymer clay). The scale is 1/2 inch. The Emperor penguin, which stands a little under 4 feet tall in real life, is 1 and 3/4 inches. The Fairy penguin, which stands about 1 and 1/2 feet tall, is 3/4 of an inch. I made the colorations as realistic as I could (considering my limited talent in that area)and included feathers for the crest on the crested penguins.
The iceberg is made out of a plastic "Styrofoam" block, that I carved, shaped, and melted with a hot butter knife. And the pool is made of resin.
